December/January Theme Battle - "Winter Festi

Journal Entry: Fri Dec 18, 2009, 12:46 PM

PRIZE UPDATE!
I have some absolutely FANTASTIC news for you guys! *DAZ-3D has graciously donated the following prizes to the winners of the Winter Festival Theme Battle:

First Place: $25 DAZ 3D Voucher
Second Place: $15 DAZ 3D Voucher
Third Place: $5 DAZ 3D Voucher

Everyone, please give *DAZ-3D a big HOORAH and visit their store at [link] to thank them!

GALLERY UPLOAD PROBLEMS
There seems to be some difficulty with uploading Group galleries. ~elfguy has helped us work out what seems to be the simplest solution. Here it is:

1. Upload your piece to DeviantART as you normally would, before the Groups came into being.
2. Visit #dazclub and click on the "Gallery" link in the menu on the top left-hand side.
3. You'll see a page with the club's galleries listed with a few of the most recent pieces from each. Look for the current Theme Battle gallery, in this case, "Winter Festival". The title bar will stretch across your page, and at the very right hand side will be a little + button. Click that +, and a list appears. Select "Contribute an Existing Deviation" and a box will pop-up with all your gallery images in it, and you can select the piece to add.
4. If you're having trouble getting the boxes and lists to appear, making sure that JavaScript is allowed in your web browser.
5. That should be it! If you're still having trouble after following these steps, please let me know and we'll work out something.

THEME DESCRIPTION
The days grow shorter and darkness falls early. The harvest is in, the wood is cut, the fire is lit, and everyone bundles up, preparing to outlast the long winter. Throughout history, cultures all over the world have celebrated a Winter Festival as a way to help pass the bleak days.

Your challenge is to render a Winter Festival, in any way you like! Images will be judged based on quality - lighting, textures, render quality, etc - and adherence to the theme. There is no special bonus skill this month, just have fun!

Since we're getting a late start due to the club conversion to a Group, this theme will run until the end of January, so you have from December 15, 2009 until midnight GMT January 31, 2010 to get your entries in.

Extra special this month, at least one random Door Prize will be given to a randomly drawn participant from ALL entries! EVERYONE has a chance to win something this month, no matter your skill level! Scroll to the bottom for more details.

RULES
* You must be a member of #dazclub to enter the battle. To join, click the "Join" link the left sidebar or at the top of the home page. A moderator will approve your membership, so allow some time for that to happen, please!

* You may use any 3D program to create your image. That includes DAZ Studio, Poser, Bryce, Cinema 4D, whatever!

* Postwork is allowed using a 2D program like Photoshop, CorelDraw, GIMP, etc.

* You can digitally paint or make a simple background in Photoshop along with your render if you choose.

:new:
* Your image must be at least 50% 3D and rendered by you! In other words, you can't just composite 3D tubes you found onto a pre-made background and expect to do well in this contest. Extra consideration is given to images that are 100% 3D; for example, using 3D props in a scene rather than just placing a rendered character on 2D background. Using a pre-made 2D background will not disqualify you, but between two images of the same quality, one that is obviously 100% 3D will do better than one that is on a pre-made background. If you have questions about this new rule, simply send us a note and ask us. We won't bite!

* No images older than the start of this battle, December 15, 2009, will be accepted.

:new:
* You should submit your images to your own galleries and, using the new "Submit to DAZClub" feature during the submission process, ALSO to the "Winter Festival" gallery folder of the DAZClub! This process is still a little buggy since it's still beta, so if you're having trouble, let us know.

* You can submit a maximum of 3 images for this battle and you may edit it as much as you like until the deadline.

* The contest runs until
Midnight of January 31, GMT (19.00/7:00pm EST)
All entries must be new as of December 15, 2009. See the corresponding time for your city here: [link] .

JUDGING :gallery:

* Images will be judged based on subject matter, image quality, lighting, design/composition and technique.

* The Winner of the monthly battle will be chosen by the admins and the previous months' Theme Battle winner and announced in a journal.

* Special consideration is given to interpretation of the this month's theme!

PRIZES :trophy:

:new:
First Place: $25 DAZ 3D Voucher
Second Place: $15 DAZ 3D Voucher
Third Place: $5 DAZ 3D Voucher
Visit their store at: [link]

:new: * First, Second, and Third Place winners get one product each from *admin-fadewillow's store. Please visit her site here: [link]

* =vvirtual has graciously donated an ongoing prize to the First Place winner each month: a printed poster of the winner's work! :cheer: Thank you so much, =vvirtual, for your continued support of the #dazclub!

* There will be First, Second, and Third place winners. All winners get a one month feature. First place winner enters the Final Year Gift Award automatically and a chance to enter the hall of fame.

* First place winner also becomes a judge for the next month's competition. If the First Place winner will not be available to judge, the prize will pass to the Second Place winner and so on. All that is required of judging is that you send your choices for First, Second, and Third place in a note to the club when the entries close. You will be reminded by us when the time comes. No one will know your choices except the admins, since your choices will be tallied with the admins' and the winners selected from there.

* If you'd like to make any prize donations for this or future #dazclub contests, please send us a Note! Vendors, donate prizes from your store in return for promotion from us!

:new:
DOOR PRIZES
Feel like you can't ever win? Special this month, there will be at least one random Door Prize drawn from ALL the entrants to the "Winter Festival" Theme Battle! Prize(s) to be announced. If you'd like to donate a Door Prize, for this or future theme battles, PLEASE contact the club or =Kethaera! Special shout out to The Fantasy Attic [link] for giving me the idea of a Door Prize.

Interview with SetoKaiba

Journal Entry: Wed Dec 30, 2009, 8:57 AM

Seto Kaiba is a 3D fantasy artist. Many of you may already know her products from Renderosity as she has been making beautiful products since October 5th 2008.

Hello Seto Kaiba. It is a great pleasure to be able to interview you on our first interview as a group. The #dazclub has grown so much and we have so many artists using 3D programs who use the creations of talented people such as yourself.

Tell us a little bit more about yourself like where you are from? When did your interest in 3D first start?
I am from Berlin and while I grew up in the loud city, I moved to the outskirts as soon as I could. Now I live in a very calm part of the town with squirrels in my garden instead of traffic in front of my house.
I was ALWAYS amazed by the art of videogames, I was obsessed with Giana Sisters on my C64 and later Toshinden (PS) when I was younger and with this my "gamer-career" started. When I begun to write my novel 3 years ago, I searched for something I could use to create illustrations for in an unusal "videogame" style. I thought that would fit better then a traditional drawing to my story. And so I got myself another obsession...

Did you study art or did you just teach yourself?
Both. I taughed myself a lot of useful things when I was a kid, I learned html f.e. when I was around 13 and making webpages has lead to learning 2d tools (like Corel, PhotoImpact, GIMP and later photoshop) too. And that brought me to study graphic design.
I did not learn much there, especially nothing related to 3d which is still not very popular in Germany. So I needed to dig through the software all by myself. But that's fine, I prefer it like this.

What are your favourite programs when it comes to creating your work?
I would not say, that I have a favorite software. I love to mix everything I can and see fit and I also try out a lot.
Most of the time I work with Photoshop or Gimp for texturing. I also love Zbrush but I am a beginner in this area.
For composing and rendering I use Poser.

How long does it normally take on average to make a new model?
Well, depending on how my "real-life" job goes and how much time my writing left me, it could be anything between one or three months. I am doing textures and shaders most of the time, so it also depends on how tricky or easy it is to make good textures for the model I work with.

Is there anything that inspires you to create your models like the current fashion, movies, nature, games, etc...?
I have no clue about plain modern fashion, never interested me. But I love movies, books, videogames and comics which are always a great source of inspiration. The work of artists I admire have an impact too. I am interested in both the traditinal arts and new, young artists work.

Do you have any favourite artist that you would like to be like or that inspires you?
I like to be myself, pretty happy with me and I believe that I can become a better artist in the future when I work hard too.
But I do admire a lot of people. AerySoul are one of them. Both of the team are not only incredible skilled but also so very supporting. It is seldom that people are willing to share so much with others and encourage beginners with their wonderful tricks and wisedom. This gives them a LOT of respect from me!!!
Fredy3d's work are also GREAT! I often browse through his unique gallery which often left me with a bit of well-deserved=good kind of envy.

And to finish off, what would you like to say to our aspiring 3D artists?
I would say: make it your own! Even if models of vendors or other creators are used in your images, or resource stuff in your products, try to give them your own personal twist.
Something that can not be copied in 10 minutes and three clicks. Try to learn as much as possible to raise your possibilities, even if that will "slow you down".
It is better to make one good image or product in which you laid all the knowledge you've achieved so far, than 5 that are nearly identical.

Thank you so much for chosing me, I hope you all had a fine christmas and great new year.
Greetings, Seto

Rules for Submissions

Journal Entry: Sun Dec 27, 2009, 3:29 AM

No excess Rule

We have not written up rules for art submissions nor do we have folders apart from a temporary one I made due to some nagging

All I ask is that you choose what you think is your best artwork and upload it to our gallery. The limit will be set as 1 image per month for each gallery folder for now. I have had members submitting 3 images at one time. Please be moderate, especially images that have the same pose, same character, different background... I will delete any excess so please I don't want to see this happening in the future. Not only do I want to see variety work but also I want to see a variety of artists uploading and showcasing their most favourite artworks for all of us to see. So please get your image in our gallery. One image per month for each gallery, excluding the Theme Battle folder, that's the only exception where we accept 3 submissions for the contests.

A note to contributers

There are no limits of how much content or freebies you can upload. The same rules for the art galleries do however still apply.

Merchant Folders

We will in the near future reserve a folder for merchants to display their products with one promotional image to our gallery. So stay tuned for that. If you wish to be a part of this project just note me or one of our admins.

Thank you all,
Enjoy the holiday season, I hope you are having a great Christmas,
`kjherstin

Paypal and Thanks

Journal Entry: Sat Dec 26, 2009, 12:05 PM

paypal problem

Firstly I want to thank all the people who have helped us by donating to the dazclub so we can buy a subscription to the club. In the past both me and our former admin: =MaiganLeigh have bought subscriptions for our club to make it a more pleasant look for all our members and to use the special CSS journal I designed to be able to showcase the winning entries with thumb previews which was only available with a premium membership.

We have a minor setback but hopefully we can get it sorted before the 60 days period. We have not been able to accept your donations and thus far we have only $1 on our account. We need a bank confirmation to be able to accept donations: a major draw back. I can't use my bank account either as it is not in my name but in one of the admin's name so I still await her reply. Since it is Christmas it is understandable that I have not been able to get this sorted with her just as yet.

Thank you all.

Our Galleries

Journal Entry: Thu Dec 24, 2009, 10:22 AM

First of all, a great big welcome to all the new members!!

Second of all, Happy Holidays!! :xmas: :santa: :holly:

Our Club Gallery is currently under construction. With the Holidays and everyone being rather busy, I hope you will give us some time to sort it out.

Currently we have only a few ways for your images to be uploaded into our gallery.
For the time being, we have created a "Member Gallery." We do not mind if you upload your images to this folder, we only ask that it be renders created in Daz Studio and of your best works only. We as a club, want to show off how good Daz Studio and you work together!
Please only submit one image every few days.
These changes are only temporary and we will have a finalized structure as soon as we can!

Thank you so much for your patience as we grow and learn with the silly new group system!

Reminder: there's only one week left for *Challenge3D's December Contest, "Christmas Time". No membership is required and the rules are simple and easy-going, not to mention there's some great prizes. Click here to read more about it: [link]

Please support them if you can!
